Wednesday, September 21, 2016 – Fresno, CA –After a dominant early race run, PR1/Mathiasen Motorsports finished P2 in class in Saturday’s Lone Star Le Mans at Circuit of the Americas.
On Friday, driver Robert Alon put the car on pole with a fast lap of 2:01.847.
When the green flag flew for Saturday’s race, Alon took off and never looked back, taking a commanding lead and opening a large gap to the next position in class.
“The guys really gave me a great car for the weekend. So I have to give a huge thank you to all of the guys at PR1 for such a quick car,” said Alon.
“I was really happy that we were able to qualify the car on pole. Because we started at the front, I didn’t have to work through any traffic the first several laps and was able to open up a nice gap to P2. The car definitely had the pace for the win, but unfortunately we came up a little bit short.”
After enduring the sweltering Texas heat, Alon was happy to turn the car over to teammate Tom Kimber-Smith for the remainder of the race. Once through the pit stop cycle, Kimber-Smith returned to the track in P5 and began picking his competitors off one by one.
It took the remainder of the race for Kimber-Smith to work his way all the way to the second position, and on the final lap, he was within .844 seconds when he took the checkered flag behind Starworks Motorsports.
“We definitely had a fast car this weekend. We had the fastest race lap and we were the quickest in all the sessions but one,” stated Kimber-Smith.
“Robert did a great job qualifying up front and keeping the car there for the race. Today, unfortunately, we failed on strategy. We’re all a little bit disappointed to finish P2, but we still came away with good points for the weekend. It makes the championship a little bit harder to get with Starworks finishing ahead of us, but we still have one more race to go, and it’s a ten-hour race so anything can happen there. We will definitely be pushing as hard as we can for the win there and hopefully we can come away with a win and the championship.”
