Wednesday, September 14, 2016 – Fresno, CA –After their win at Road America just over a month ago, the PR1/Mathiasen Motorsports team is taking their winning momentum to Austin, TX for the Lone Star Le Mans at the Circuit of the Americas on Saturday, September 17.
Drivers Robert Alon and Tom Kimber-Smith currently sit second in the PC points championship behind Starworks Motorsports drivers Alex Popow and Renger van der Zande. However, after their win at Road America, Alon and Kimber-Smith are only behind by seven points. With only two races remaining, Alon and Kimber-Smith have their sights set on a podium finish and closing in on the championship.
“Coming off a great weekend in Road America, we go to one of my favorite tracks on the calendar, Circuit of the Americas. This circuit can be challenging from the high Texas temperatures to amazing down pours of rain. Who knows what we will see this week,” said Kimber-Smith.
“I'm looking forward to getting on track this week, and both Robert and myself will be pushing really hard to close down this championship deficit.”
The current weather report calls for isolated thunderstorms on Friday and Saturday and near 90 degree temperatures throughout the weekend. Alon, who will be racing at Circuit of the Americas for the first time, is no stranger to racing in the rain or brutally warm temperatures and is looking forward to driving a new track and also closing the gap to the Starworks team.
“We’re definitely pushing for the championship. We’re only seven points behind, so it’s definitely in our grasp,” explained Alon.
“We just have to keep our heads down, be smart and consistent, and we’ll hopefully be on the podium Saturday afternoon. This will be my first time driving at COTA. I’ve driven it on the simulator before, but I’m really looking forward to driving on the actual track. There are a lot of corners that all vary in speeds, so I know it’s going to be a challenge to get up to speed right away, but I’m definitely looking forward to the challenge and closing the gap in the championship.”
Practice for the Lone Star Le Mans begins on Thursday with qualifying on Friday. Tune in to Fox Sports 2 at 12:30 PM CT to watch the Lone Star Le Mans LIVE on Saturday, September 17.
