** As many know, one of the PR1/Mathiasen Motorsports alumni drivers, Andrew Palmer, was involved in a terrible accident last weekend during a Pirelli World Challenge event at Lime Rock Park. Our thoughts and prayers are with Andrew and his family at this time, and we ask everyone to join us in praying for a full recovery for Andrew.
"We're looking forward to this weekend at Detroit, but we all have our teammate Andrew Palmer on our minds," said team principal Bobby Oergel. "Over the past year Andrew has become a part of our family, and when part of your family is hurt, you hurt. We are praying and will continue to pray for a full recovery for Andrew as well as comfort and strength for his family and friends during this time. Andrew is one of the nicest and most genuine young men I've had the pleasure of working with, and all of us here at PR1 hope he heals quick and that we can all get back to the track together really soon." **
Wednesday, June 1, 2016 – Fresno, CA – After their first win of the season at Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca, the PR1 Mathiasen/Motorsports team is ready to carry that momentum to the Chevrolet Sports Car Classic in Detroit, MI. The Motor City race will be the second and final street course the IMSA Weathertech Sportscar Championship will visit in 2016.
Both PR1 drivers Robert Alon and Tom Kimber-Smith hope to carry the energy from their first win of the season at Laguna to Detroit and finish the weekend with another trip to the podium. For rookie driver Alon, he’s set to learn a brand new track and gain more street course experience.
“I’m really excited to head to Detroit this week. Long Beach was my first street course ever, and it was a ton of fun to drive, but also very challenging when you’re not accustomed to driving inside concrete barriers and having no room for error,” explained Alon, 25, of Encino, CA.
“I’m definitely looking forward to learning a new track and especially another street course. As the season has progressed, I think the battles in class have gotten a lot more interesting, so I’m eager to see how the weekend plays out, and hopeful that we can finish on the podium again this weekend.”
Kimber-Smith showed great pace at the 2015 Detroit Grand Prix, and he’s more than ready for another shot at victory at the Belle Isle street course after being caught up in someone else’s wreck last year and not being able to finish the race.
“Last year we didn’t have a great race at Detroit. The car was very quick, but unfortunately I got caught up in someone else’s accident, so we don’t know where we would have finished on pace, but I think it could have definitely been in the top three,” said Kimber-Smith, 31, of Wokingham, England.
“Going back there, I feel that we’ll have a solid car. Robert has never been there, so the first couple of practice sessions will be devoted to getting him up to speed as quickly as possible. He continues to improve more and more each race, so I think he should have no problem getting up to pace this weekend.”
After their win at Laguna Seca, the PR1/Mathiasen Motorsports team is tied for first place in the PC Points championship with the JDC Miller Motorsports team.
“We just need to bag as many points as we can at this stage of the season. We’d love to keep winning, but it’s not the ultimate thing. If we finish second or third consistently, we’ll be happy with that, and that should put us in a good position towards the end of the season,” explained Kimber-Smith.
“Detroit is a bumpy, difficult circuit. It’s low grip, and slightly different to Long Beach. The track rubbers up a little bit quicker, but it’s definitely bumpier. Because of the bumps, we’ll be changing the set up quite a bit from Laguna Seca to there, but as long as we can come away from the weekend with more points, we’ll be quite happy.”
All of the action from the Chevrolet Sports Car Classic at Detroit starts Friday, June 3 with the first practice at 8:05AM EST. You can watch the race LIVE and in its entirety on Saturday, June 4 starting at 12:30 PM EST on Fox Sports 1.
