Thursday, August 4, 2016 – Fresno, CA – Coming off of their sixth podium finish of the season, PR1/Mathiasen Motorsports drivers Robert Alon and Tom Kimber-Smith are looking forward to continuing their podium streak at round 9 of the WeatherTech sports car championship this weekend at the Continental Tire Road Race Showcase at Road America.
With only three prototype challenge races remaining, both Kimber-Smith and Alon have set their sights to finish as best as possible as the event could play a major role in the eventual championship. Alon and Kimber-Smith are currently second in the PC point’s championship, only 17 points behind Alex Popow and Renger van der Zande of Starworks Motorsports.
Alon and Kimber-Smith have completed many laps at the 4-mile, Wisconsin road course, with Kimber-Smith completing those laps in PC cars and Alon having competed twice in the prototype lites series, but both are looking forward to hitting the track on Friday and seeing with they can do in the No. 52 PC machine.
"I've competed here twice in the prototype lites series and have to say there's no other track quite like Road America here in the United States," said Alon.
"The track has so many long straights and fast, sweeping corners. You might think you can take a break on the straightaways, but you're always watching your mirrors or dealing with traffic. It was a blast to drive in the lites car here, but I'm really looking forward to feeling the difference in the PC car with all of the added downforce and speed. I've been running a lot of laps of Road America on the simulator, so I know it's going to be a lot faster than the lites car, but I can't wait to get out there on Friday and push as hard as we can through the weekend."
Kimber-Smith's last trip to road America in 2015 with PR1 resulted in a disappointing finish at the end of the weekend, but he is determined to attain his seventh podium of the season there this weekend.
"I’m really looking forward to going back to Road America this weekend. Last year we didn't have a great race or result, however, we are going back there after coming off a strong race at Lime Rock," explained Kimber-Smith.
"Road America is a circuit with a lot of 90 degree corners which all vary in speed, so it's very challenging, but those are the types of tracks I really enjoy driving. Our main goals for the weekend are to finish the race with the car in one piece and maintain, or better, our standings in the point’s championship. We've got a lot of great energy coming off of Lime Rock and I'm really looking forward to hitting the track on Friday."
