Thursday, February 4, 2016 – Fresno, CA – After 24 hours of racing at the most iconic race in North America, the No. 52 PR1/Mathiasen Motorsports team finished second in the Prototype Challenge class at the first race of the WeatherTech Sportscar Championshp – The Rolex 24 at Daytona.
The team started the twice around the clock race at the back of the class after electing not to qualify in the rain and risk damaging the car, but after a few short green flag laps, Tom Kimber-Smith had their PC machine in P1. Daytona rookies Robert Alon, Nick Boulle and Jose Gutierrez, all completed flawless stints and were able to extend their lead over the other competitors.
“If you would have told me last week that my team and I would finish second in my first shot at the Rolex 24, I probably wouldn’t have believed you,” said Boulle, 26 of Dallas, TX.
“We were all confident going into the race, but to be fair, we were an unknown quantity. Of course Tom (Kimber-Smith) has loads of experience and we all knew he was going to be fast, but the rest of us were rookies to the track, so to come away with a second place finish, even with the issue that took us over the wall, it’s pretty incredible.”
It wasn’t until after the halfway point of the race that the team experienced a problem that sent them behind the wall. Once they were back to the garage, the crew found the problem, which was a faulty fuel pump relay, fixed it and had the car back on track. Unfortunately, the team lost 20 laps during the time it took to make the repairs, but that wasn’t going to stop them from making a charge back to the front.
Throughout the remainder of the race, the PR1 crew and drivers put their heads down, completed faultless pit stops and managed to make up 17 of the 20 laps they had lost during the time spent over the wall, finishing three laps behind the PC class leader and P2 in class. The team gained valuable points toward the WeatherTech Sportscar Championship team and driver championships, and are currently tied for first in the Tequila Patron North American Endurance Cup Championship.
“I feel really positive about the result of my first race with PR1,” stated 19-year-old Gutierrez of Monterey, Mexico.
“We all completed great stints, and Tom Kimber-Smith was able to make a great finish for us, only three laps behind the leader. I’m excited to have finished with such a great result, and now I’m looking forward to our next event at Sebring in March.
Alon, 25 of Encino, CA shared Gutierrez’s thoughts after completing his first 24-hour race.
“This was a real eye opener. There was so much more going on on-track than there had been in the practices, so I’m really pleased with my results personally but also with the team as a whole,” explained Alon.
“I was so impressed by all of the guys. The other drivers, the crew – everyone just worked their tails off and it showed when we crossed the line P2. We definitely had the car to win, so it’s bittersweet coming in second, but that just makes us all that much more ready to get back on the track at Sebring and hopefully finish one step higher. I can’t thank the PR1 crew enough, as well as PSC (Professional Security Consultants), Westfield and my Dad for all of the support and for seeing us through to the finish.”
PR1 veteran Kimber-Smith, 31, of Wokinghan, England, set a new race lap record while behind the wheel with a 1:42.850. Although Kimber-Smith had hopes of defending his 2015 race win at Daytona, he was still content with a second-place finish.
“I'm fairly happy with the second-place at Daytona. Everyone in the team worked really hard and the car was fast all race,” stated Kimber-Smith.
“Robert (Alon), Jose (Gutierrez) and Nick (Boulle) went well beyond my expectations and did a fantastic job. The team made no mistakes and the car, apart from being dirty, looked the same at the end of the race as it did at the start. It was a real shame that a relay broke, and stopped us in our tracks, putting us 20 laps down and out of the lead. However, no one gave up and we pushed hard to the finish. I want to thank the team, PR1, my teammates, Robert, Jose, Nick and all of our sponsors. I'm looking forward to getting to Sebring in a couple of weeks so we can stand on that top step.”
